Marcus manages to keep up his smile until he gets closer to home and then, bit by bit, the smile slips.
He is happy for Sabrina, of course he is. She’s an adult now, a grown woman with a relationship and a career, a business of her own, and she deserves her own space. He loves that it’s her home, too, the one she grew up in, and he’s so happy for her.
But she’s his daughter. Whether by blood or not, whatever else is true of their lives before here, she is his family, his daughter, and he hadn’t realized just how difficult it would be for him when she left.
The house won’t be empty, of course, Dan is still there with him, and they have Trass, but it will be different. They’ll be empty nesters, not a title he had ever imagined would apply to him, and he laughs a little as he crosses the yard and heads for the front door.
She’s close, the house is within walking distance, and yet Marcus still feels suddenly lonely.
“Dan?” he calls when he gets inside. “Are you home, love?”
